The EcoRaft
Project - EcoRaft is an
interactive, computer
animated ecosystem designed by an interdisciplinary group of computer
science
and ecology students and faculty at UCI. The project has
several goals, foremost to create a novel teaching tool that educates 8
to 15
year olds about ecology and restoration in an accurate and engaging
way. By showcasing the findings of our own
ecological studies into this virtual restoration process, we are also
creating
an original way to share current scientific research.
The Pacfic Island Ecosystem Research
Center
(USGS-PIERC) - A wonderful network of people and scientists studying
ecology and evolution in the Hawaiian Islands. I worked on a
variety
of USGS-PIERC projects
between 2000 and 2003 including the Puahiohi Recovery Project and the
Biocomplexity Project. They have great opprtunities for doing
field
work in one of the most remarkable places in the world.
Organzation for
Tropical Studies
(OTS) - I had the fortune of participating on an OTS course this past
summer in Costa Rica. If you are a student interested in tropical
ecology or field biology, an OTS
course
is awonderful experience. As of this year, they now offer
undergraduate field courses in Costa Rica and Africa.
Council
on International Educational
Exchange (CIEE) - CIEE offers
numerous study abroad opportunities
for students in the biological sciences including a field course in
Costa Rica!
The Sierra Club - America's
oldest,
largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.
The
Rocky Mountain Institute - An
entrepreneurial
nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use
of resources to make the world secure, just, prosperous, and
life-sustaining.
