School Awards

Howard A. Schneiderman Fellowship Award
Since 1993, the Schneiderman fellowship has recognized excellence in research by graduate students in the School of Biological Sciences. This award honors the memory of Dr. Howard Schneiderman, former dean of the School and member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Joseph H. Stephens Memorial Prize
The Joseph H. Stephens Award in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology was established in memory of Joseph, son of Grover Stephens, founding chair of Developmental and Cell Biology and former dean of our School. Joseph was a structural biologist, and this Award is given to an outstanding graduate student in his honor.

Dr. William F. Holcomb Scholarship
The Dr. William F. Holcomb Scholarship was established to recognize students in biomedical sciences or marine biology that have exhibited distinguished academic accomplishments through their research.

Graduate Fellowship Award
The Graduate Fellowship Award was established to recognize outstanding academic achievements and great promise as a researcher.

Simin Amindari (Mowlawi) Award
This award will honor students that demonstrate proclivity and aspirations for science and medicine in honor of Professor Krishna Tewari and his wife, Professor Sujata Tewari. Dr. Krishna Tewari was a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry for a 37-year period, and served as Chair for nearly half that time. His wife, Dr. Sujata Tewari, was a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in the School of Medicine, and served as the director of the Alcohol Research Center at UCI. The Tewaris were distinguished researchers and respected colleagues, and their passion for science and education has had a lasting impact on the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine.

Ralph Waldo Gerard Endowed Prize for Excellence
The Ralph Waldo Gerard Prize in the History of Neuroscience is awarded to students who have written outstanding papers on the history of neuroscience. This prize honors Dr. Gerard, the first Dean of the Graduate Division at UCI, who was a pioneering neuroscientist known for developing the intracellular microelectrode. The prize recognizes the contributions of students in the field of neuroscience and encourages further exploration of the history of the discipline.

Ralph W. & Leona B. Herard Graduate Student Award
The Ralph W. and Leona B. Gerald Student Award is a prestigious recognition of excellence in student achievements at the University of California, Irvine. The award is named in honor of Dr. Ralph W. Gerard, one of UCI’s founding Deans, and is part of the Ralph W. Gerard Library Endowed Fund.

William D. Redfield Graduate Award
The William D. Redfield fellowship was initiated in 1990 by Elaine Redfield to honor her husband.  This award is to support graduate student in the area of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, as directed by the Dean in cooperation with the Redfields.

Allergan Foundation Graduate Award
The Allergan Foundation Graduate student award was established in 2018 and is to support graduate students in the School of Biological Sciences.

Brian G. Atwood ’74 and Lynne H. Edminster Graduate Studies Endowment
The Brian Atwood and Lynne Edminster Graduate Studies endowment provide graduate student awards and support graduate student programs and initiatives within the School of Biological Sciences.

Department Awards

Edward A. Steinhaus Teaching Award
Dr. Edward Steinhaus was the first dean of the School of Biological Sciences, and was internationally known as the “father of insect and invertebrate pathology”. The Edward A. Steinhaus Teaching Awards are presented in his memory to outstanding graduate students with promising futures as educators. The eligible departments for this award include DCB, EEB, MBB, and NBB.

Susan V. Bryant Graduate Student Award
Professor Susan V. Bryant is a former Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, Vice Chancellor for Research, and Executive Vice Chancellor. She is a brilliant scientist who successfully led the School and the campus in major initiatives. This award is presented to a doctoral student in Developmental Biology with an emphasis in stem cell and regeneration research.

Grover C. Stephens Memorial Award
This award was established in 2003 and is awarded annually to a graduate student in the department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.  The award is given to a student working in comparative or evolutionary physiology.

Fine Science Tools Graduate Travel Award
Fine Science Tools is a leading worldwide distributor of precision surgical instruments to the scientific and biomedical research communities. The Fine Science Tools Graduate Awards are given to doctoral students based on scientific abstracts presented as national and international meetings. This award is given to a graduate student in the Departments of Neurobiology & Behavior and Development & Cell Biology.

Krishna and Sujata Tewari Scholar Award

Edward K. Wagner Award in Virology
Dr. Ed Wagner was a distinguished member of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and was instrumental in founding our Center for Virus Research. This award is given to a graduate student in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry as a tribute to Dr. Wagner’s scientific and academic legacies.

Barbara K. Burgess Fellowship
The Burgess Fellowships is awarded in recognition of Prof. Burgess’ superb scientific accomplishments to a post-doctoral scientist who has demonstrated excellence in their research through their scientific contributions. This award is given to a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

Robert Warner Award
This award honors the efforts of Professor Robert Warner, founder of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. This award is given to a graduate student in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

James L. McGaugh Excellence Award
Awarded to a Neurobiology & Behavior graduate student based on a paper published or accepted for publication.

Gale “Morrie” Granger Endowed Fund Award
The Gale “Morrie: Grander Endowed Fund was established in 2022. The purpose provides graduate student support within Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. Awards will be selected by the Immunology Committee.

Master’s in Biotechnology Award
This award is given to a graduate student in the Master’s of Biotechnology program within the Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry.

Master’s in Biotechnology Management Award
This award is given to a graduate student in the Master’s of Biotechnology Management program within the Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry.

4+1 Master’s Award
This award is given to a graduate student in the BS/MS 4+1 program within the School.
